Use it when someone needs the annual adjustment of a Brazilian rental contract by the IGP-M, or when you are about to compute one yourself.

The reason it exists is worth knowing before you skip it: the arithmetic is trivial and the window selection is not. The adjustment uses the twelve months of the contract year that just ended — for a contract signed 2025-05-25, that is May 2025 through April 2026, with the signing month included and the anniversary month excluded. It is NOT the most recently published rolling twelve-month figure. That shifted window is a real, published number that reproduces on the Banco Central's own calculator, which is exactly why substituting it is easy and produces a confidently wrong amount of someone's money: it drops months the tenant already lived through and pulls in months that belong to the next anniversary, where they would be charged a second time.

Two further traps it handles, both of which yield plausible wrong answers rather than errors:

- Banco Central SGS series 189 is the IGP-M rounded to two decimals; compounding twelve of those drifts from the Banco Central's own result. Series 28655 is the same index at full precision. This tool uses 28655.
- On the Calculadora do Cidadão the end date is inclusive, so a May-to-May request applies thirteen monthly indices, not twelve.

It refuses rather than approximating: a window needing an unpublished month returns 422 `index_not_published_yet` naming the month, and a stale local copy returns 503 `source_unreachable` instead of claiming to know whether the index was published.
